SearchWhat to do about Robbie02nd March 2007
Follow up: seton the other side of the world. Then theres the football side of things. Robbie has only ever been truly happy playing for Liverpool. His heart belongs to Liverpool, and its hard for him to show the same motivation to play for anyone else. He did ok for Leeds and for City, but only Liverpool can bring out that little bit extra in him. Liverpool is the only place where he is truly happy. America, Dubai and Qatar are places for the washed up footballer with not much left to offer. That is not Robbie Fowler, not yet anyway. For me, the only place Robbie should be playing his football next season is at Anfield. Ive heard the arguments that his legs have gone, that he isnt the player he was, that he just isnt fit enough to play at the top level anymore, but I dont buy it. I watched Robbie against Sheffield United, and I thought he did ok. Did he look fully fit? No, but then who would after just three Premiership starts so far this season? Iheard people saying he looked knackered before half time, but Robbie always looks knackered, even when he was younger he often had that look. If he was so knackered, would he been able to execute that pass to Gerrard for the fourth goal? Even in the last minute he almost created a chance for Kuyt with an unselfish pass. Robbies fitness is fine, but his sharpness is clearly lacking a bit. Hes played in the cups, and hes scored goals. He might not be the quickest, but he still knows where the goal is and I still think he can make a contribution. When he was playing regularly last season, he performed very well. Hes fitter now than he was then, but he hasnt got the match sharpness because hes hardly played. Hes started seven games this season, and he has seven goals. He has been on the field for 687 minutes, so thats a goal every 98 minutes. So what if three have been penalties. You still have to put the ball in the net, and weve missed enoughpenalties in recent years to know that it is not a guarantee of a goal. In my opinion he has been under-used this season. I wouldnt play him in tough away games where we are unlikely to be dominating possession for long periods. If we need to play on the break, then Robbie isnt much use. In those games he can often seem like a passenger. In home games against sides that just want to defend however, Id play Robbie every time. All of our forwards have their own attributes, and all our useful in different situations. Dirks a good all rounder with a great work ethic, Crouch holds the ball up well and is a nuisance because of his height, and Bellamys pace is vital against teams who leave space in behind. Robbies strength is his finishing. Give him a chance and hell bury it. You cant say the same about any of our other forwards, and thats why Id use him in every game at Anfield even if its only as a substitute. Theres stilllife in his old legs yet, and Id give him another year. Thats not just sentiment talking either, for me there is no question that Robbie would still score goals in a side that was creating chances for him. Sadly I dont think it will happen, particularly given Rafas comment about if he scores in every game he plays, who knows. That seems like an awful lot to ask, but this is God we’re talking about here. A lot can happen between now and the end of the season.
