smallclub.jpgWhat the f*ck do we care?” So the song goes, yet they’ve got a funny way of showing it haven’t they? A throwaway line from Rafa after the derby has caused a huge storm on Merseyside, as the blues have gone apoplectic. It seems it’s ok for them to constantly take little pot shots about them being the ‘People’s Club’ and how none of our fans actually come from Liverpool. It’s also ok for Stubbs to make xenophobic comments about dem foreigners and call Luis Garcia a cheat after he was the victim of a potentially leg breaking challenge from an Everton player. There are countless other examples of them saying whatever they like about us, whilst weve maintained a dignified silence and let them crack on.

Follow up:

It would seem they can dish it out but can’t take it.

Weve had Keith Whinearse saying: Of course, Mr Benitez is entitled to his opinion, but I suspect he is in a minority of one in believing Everton is, in any respect, a small football club. Somehow we have come to expect more of a Liverpool manager

Minority of one? One what, million? As for what youve come to expect, no-one at Liverpool gives a flying one what youve come to expect, you fat strunz. Youre an insignificant nobody, and the only time you ever seem to get your name in the papers is when making some sort of comment involving Liverpool FC. You can shove your groundshare up your arse too, theres plenty of room in there by the looks of it.

Then we have Gollum: There’s a difference of about £100million in spending between the two clubs and we have not done badly against them. Itwould be nice for these managers to show a bit of humility.

£100m eh? Total cost of Liverpools 16 on Saturday = £69m Total cost of Evertons 16 = £42m (£44m if they make Howards move permanent). And what does these managers mean? Another foreigners jibe maybe? Or does he simply mean managers from Big clubs?

Moyes also said: There is no doubt we are in the shadow of Liverpool, but we are doing out utmost to compete with them

So you admit you are in our shadow, yet you wont admit youre small? If you arent small, yet youre in our shadow, then Jesus Christ, how big must we be? Were talking Joe Royle head, or James Beatte arse size here.

The irony in all this, is that Rafa wasnt referring to them as a small club in the sense of them being a Tranmere or a Chester. It wasnt a derogatory comment, it was a realistic one. Had he said the same thing about Portsmouthor Blackburn after they had came to Anfield and played for a draw, would there have been this kind of uproar from them? No, because theyd accept what he meant by it, and they know their current standing in English football.

So do Everton see themselves as being bigger than Pompey and Blackburn? It would appear so. In terms of trophies won in their history, theyd be right. In terms of their current standing in English football, who are they kidding?

I say its ironic, because in trying to defend himself against a perceived insult that was probably not actually intended in the way they have taken it (surely Rafa actually meant to say smaller rather than small), Moyes has simply proved Benitez right. In the build up to the game he was giving it the were just the poor little neighbour who cant compete with the rich guy who lives in the mansion at the top of our street routine. He did the same after he heard Rafas comment, making thatsilly £100m reference.

Lets say those figures were accurate (they arent), and their team cost £100m less than ours. Surely that means theyre small compared to us? You cant have it both ways Moyesy, make your mind up. Are you a small club who cant compete or are you one of the big boys?

As for the comment about humility, youve got to laugh at that. If there is a more humble man in the Premiership than Rafa Benitez then Ive yet to see him.

Everton should have just laughed off Rafas comment, but instead they got all upset and are playing the victims, as usual. They have previous for it though. They spread rumours round the city for years about Fowler taking drugs, and taunted him with smackhead every derby, but as soon as Robbie snorted the goal-line in front of them suddenly they rediscovered their morals and were all how dare he do that, what kind of example is that setting to the kids who were watching.

Whyis this even a story? Its getting all the headlines after the derby, when there were far more important issues worth discussion in the press. Im not talking about our extremely disappointing lack of guile or creativity, although Rafas comments have certainly ensured that our shortcomings are not being discussed in the way they perhaps should be.

No, Im referring to the sick chants about Steven Gerrard and his family. Had Gerrard scored, and made a cradling the baby celebration in front of them, theyd have been running to the nearest policeman screaming crowd incitement faster than you can say hypoctritical bitter bastards. And what about the Justice for the 39 chants inside the ground, also outside the Hillsborough memorial? Lets hear what Wyness has to say about that, as Id be very interested to hear his views.

Rafa is guilty of nothing more than a poor choice of words. Had he said smaller then even the bluessurely couldnt have made as much an issue of this as they have (maybe Im giving them too much credit there). Getting ten men behind the ball in a derby and playing for a 0-0 doesnt make them small. Celebrating it like theyd won an FA Cup Final does. Their reaction was what youd expect from Yeovil or Kettering fans after securing a draw at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup. That is what makes them small time, not going away from home against a better team and playing for a draw.

So how long before the David holds Goliath DVD hits the shelves then, Mr Wyness? Evertonians. Can’t live with em…. can’t live with em.
