Follow up:
Promising Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez joined Liverpool in July 2005 from Albacete, for whom he had shone in La Liga in 2004/05 despite their relegation at the end of the campaign.
A cruciate ligament injury late in the season looked like it might have scuppered his hopes of moving to Liverpool, but a season-long loan deal was agreed, much to his delight:
"I knew Liverpool were interested in me but after the injury I thought everything had changed," he said. "To go from injured at a second division Spanish side to the European Champions is like winning the lottery."
However, the move was thrown into doubt when his application for a work permit was refused.
