Liverpool have finally succeeded in gaining a work permit for Mark González, a year after signing the Chile winger.

The Home Office initially refused to grant a permit and turned down an appeal, but Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, was not prepared to give up on González after signing him from Albacete and was rewarded for his patience yesterday. González has been on loan at Real Sociedad, for whom he scored five goals in 16 appearances.

Benítez also tied up the signing of Fábio Aurélio, the Brazilian full back, on a free transfer from Valencia yesterday. Aurelio gives Liverpool more strength in defence, an area bolstered on Monday when Gabriel Paletta arrived at Anfield from Banfield, the Argentine club.
