Poem by Toby Jones

Liverpool v Newcastle FA Cup Final 1974

The Geordie Boys were full of talk
But come the hour they couldn't walk

For Redman played the finest words
And Supermac he wasn’t heard

We closed them down and left them dead

Just chasing shadows all in red
Smithy crossed and Keegan's boots

Struck hard and nothing McFaul could do

Then Big Bamber took the stage
With body swerves the second came

Big Alec’s goal offside was ruled
But history shows the goal was true

We gave the black and white a class

Of football that none have surpassed
A dozen passes Keegan scores

And heaven’s knockin’ at our door

Shanks he waved up to the Kop
And Coleman’s words in lights they shone

“Keegan 2 Heighway 1

Liverpool 3 Newcastle None!”
